You have the ring, told all of your friends and now you are faced with the planning and preparation. Where do you start? Planning for your wedding is often a time consuming effort, ideally this should be a joint effort rather than one sided. In some cultures, the bride's side are responsible for the organisation and financial cover of the wedding ceremony. These days it is fifty-fifty. Choosing a wedding venue is the most expensive and difficult one to start with, which is why many couples begin their prep with booking a venue.

Luxury hotels are one of the most popular venues for a wedding function. They are also more expensive; however, some hotels offer discounts and package deals. Looking up your favourite hotels can be fun; many will describe in detail the services they offer for special occasions. However, as hotels are a popular choice they are booked very quickly, usually a year in advance so it is a good idea to arrange this earlier on.

When looking up luxury hotels, check for what the price includes. Some bigger named hotels charge mainly for their name and reputation. Enquire about their package deals, how many people can they cater for and do they have an in-house catering service at no extra charge? Other things to point out are the size of their main hall and the size of their external grounds. Sometimes hotels are situated near scenic backgrounds, which can be good for taking pictures.

Most luxury hotels will offer civil service ceremonies and a wedding suite. Depending upon the theme of your wedding, you are more than likely to invite a large number of people, therefore, it is important to have it clear in your mind whether there will be enough room to seat all of your guests, as you do not want the hassle of arranging two seating. A wedding suite is a designated room for weddings ceremonies only and is used by the couple as a place to get ready and prepare.

Smaller hotels with fewer rooms tend to feel more personal than larger hotels with more rooms, so the guests feel like the service is focussed upon them. For people looking to get married abroad, they may feel it is useful to visit the location and the hotel prior to the actual wedding ceremony. This way you will be secure in the knowledge that there will be no hidden surprises on the day. Often weddings abroad make for a more romantic and memorable setting, with many of the luxury hotels abroad offering extra services inclusive to their package deals.

It is always a good idea to enquire about any wedding package deals they have available, with details of what is included in the deal. Some hotels, may upgrade your service to first class if you are newlyweds - it has been known that airlines may bump you up into first class seating if you mention that you are newly married and are on your honeymoon. It is worth a try!

Always obtain a copy of your itinerary so you know what are being charged for and how much each item will cost you. Sometimes hotels do not include decorations, so you may need to research external decorating services within the area. Shop around and get an average quote per company.

Other questions when looking at luxury hotels for your ceremony, are things like what are their cancellation policy? What is their coat and bathroom facilities like? Will you have enough room for a band and dancing? Where on the grounds, is the best place to take photographs? Do you have to pay a deposit and is there a payment schedule? Do they offer adequate parking space for your guests?

In addition, if you are going to have alcohol at your reception, do they have a liquor licence? Will you need to book an appointment to taste test the food? Are there any overtime charges? Before you sign the contract, are there any extra hidden charges? It is always a good idea to visit a few places first before signing on the dotted line. Get a broad range of ideas before making your decision.

When choosing a luxury hotel, you have the advantage of staying there as well for the night so you can extend the celebration for longer. For people choosing to celebrate their wedding abroad or on a beach, they may enjoy a honeymoon period at the same location giving you more value for your money.
