Who wouldn’t like a superstar smile? You know, one where your teeth are shiny white and match perfectly with the red of your lips. A smile that you want to use all the time, a smile that makes people instantly fall in love with you. Except, this smile is not available to everyone. And while we might use the reddest of lipsticks somehow they all fail to impress in combination with slightly yellowish teeth.

Naturally cosmetic dentistry comes to mind, as the perfect solution. There are a number of whitening procedures offered by cosmetic dentistry to make your smile whiter and brighter: starting with whitening toothpastes, at- home bleaching, whitening strips and gels up to laser bleaching and mouthpiece trays. These are but a few of the teeth whitening solutions offered by cosmetic dentistry, so obviously there is a bright palette to choose from. But which procedure is right for me? - One could naturally ask, confused by the many teeth whitening possibilities. It is recommended that one visits a professional to be informed of all possibilities, and based on each specific case the specialist will recommend the most appropriate teeth whitening procedure that cosmetic dentistry has to offer. This is especially important since there are many debates concerning the best solutions offered by cosmetic dentistry. Many believe that a “do it in the shower” or “quick overnight” teeth whitening is more than enough while others argue that the old “at- home” teeth whitening procedures are way out, not to mention dangerous.

Teeth whitening, regardless of the whitening procedures used, is not for everyone. The ideal candidates for teeth whitening are patients who have healthy teeth with no or very few fillings and healthy gums. But cosmetic dentistry is not recommended for pregnant women, individuals with sensitive teeth, gum diseases or cavities. In such cases cosmetic dentistry will very probably be much less successful if not totally in vain.

However if one insists on a teeth whitening procedure one should know that such a procedure does not stand as a life time guarantee for white teeth. Teeth whitening procedures need to be repeated periodically, if one wants to maintain a permanent white color. Also if one expects radiantly white teeth as an immediate result after having undergone cosmetic dentistry, one might be slightly disappointed, as results may vary from case to case. Moreover, after having undergone cosmetic dentistry such products as tobacco, tea and coffee should be avoided, as they cause yellowing and diminish the results of teeth whitening remarkably. These products cause external stains on the teeth. But teeth may also have internal or intrinsic stains caused by early administration of antibiotics or exposure to too much fluoride at an early age. Cosmetic dentistry takes it upon itself to clean internal stains as well, but teeth whitening still has the best results in the case of surface stains caused by the above mentioned products, as well as food and age.

Besides the beautiful transformation that makes you feel better about yourself, cosmetic dentistry may also have a number of side effects. Although there are no serious risks involved, when undergoing cosmetic dentistry one should have the following in mind: teeth may become temporarily sensitive and gum irritation may appear. These side effects result one the one hand because of the solutions used in the teeth whitening procedure, on the other hand because of an ill-fitting mouthpiece tray. Such side effects of cosmetic dentistry may be avoided by the use of high fluoride-containing products, which re-mineralize the teeth, the use of toothpaste for sensitive teeth or wearing the mouthpiece tray more often for shorter periods of time.

In conclusion, cosmetic dentistry offers the possibility to improve not only your image but your self esteem as well. Yet the range of possibilities offered by cosmetic dentistry should not be overrated, as result may vary based on different teeth types. Teeth whitening procedures also involve a series of risks, which although small, should be considered before undergoing a teeth whitening procedure. However if one insists on having a superstar smile regardless of the side effects, cosmetic dentistry may just be the perfect solution!
Author Resource:- Teeth whitening applied on your teeth without first informing yourself can have side effects. This is why I recommend safe cosmetic dentistry interventions and the advice of a dentist before. Thinking only about the aspect of the teeth without any concern for their health can be a mistake.
