You have watched the pros, you have heard the endorsements, and you have seen the advertisements but how do you know what ball will actually work for you? Surely using the same ball as Tiger will give you the same handicap as him, right? Wrong!
Whether you are a beginner or a pro, golf balls are quite essential to the overall game. But the real question is, which one do you choose? With thousands of different styles and designs out there, how do you find a ball that is right for you, and right for your game? Picking out the best ball for you is dependant upon your taste, expectation, and the amount that you will be willing to spend.
Now, lets get down to some common sense. If you are a beginner, you need to forget about all of the different brands that you have heard about, because lets face it, beginning golfers will loose a lot of balls. In learning how to keep the ball straight, keep it in the fairway, and keep it out of the sand and/or water, beginners will go through dozens of golf balls, therefore, thinking about price rather than quality is quite logical.
This is the perfect time to invest in used golf balls. Used golf balls that are in great condition and ready to play can be purchased in bulk over the internet, or at your local golf shop. Top grade used golf balls which are described as like new are called Grade A or Grade 1. Balls with minimal blemishes, but still play like new are referred as Grade B or Grade 2, and balls that have many marks and blemishes are considered Grade C or 3. Grade 3 balls are perfect for first timers, who just want to practice.
As a golfer gets better, the best idea would be to move to a better grade of ball. This does not mean to rush off and buy the most expensive balls that you can find. You will probably continue to lose some, and the cost of missing balls can quickly become quite expensive. Again, consider your skill level and your swing, then choose the ball that will help build upon your strengths.
Golf balls come in three styles: 2 piece, 3 piece, and high performance. If you want to improve your distance and get a faster speed off the tee, 2 piece golf balls are a perfect choice. Not only are they designed with a large rubber core, they are the most common genre on the market, and still relatively inexpensive. The 3 piece ball is multilayered, which gives you more control and spin on your shots, but it wont fly as far as the 2 piece. If you are able to maintain consistent accuracy, and you are above beginner level then the 3 piece ball is something you will want to consider. For the expert player who wants to go the distance, and isnt concerned about cost, then the high performance golf ball is what will give you that special edge and give you much more control and spin than the 3 piece.
Whether you are pro, beginner, or the once a year player just remember to have fun, control your game, and practice, practice, practice.
